Abstract

Intercultural communicative competence (ICC) has become an essential objective of English language teaching, requiring instructional approaches that promote meaningful interaction across cultural boundaries. This chapter presents three hybrid games (Lost in Translation, Culture Court, and Passport Please) designed to support the development of ICC in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. The games were developed from the author's experience in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and are grounded in Byram’s Intercultural Communicative Competence framework and Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity. Each activity is adaptable for both face-to-face and online learning environments and is complemented by reflective follow-up tasks to deepen students’ intercultural awareness. The chapter describes the objectives, implementation procedures, and pedagogical rationale of each game, demonstrating how game-based learning can foster active participation, perspective-taking, and authentic communication. These practical activities provide EFL teachers with flexible instructional strategies for integrating intercultural learning into hybrid classrooms while promoting student engagement and meaningful language use.
