Abstract

Yekhonya, R. A. (2025). Students’ beliefs towards the use of Indonesian language as L1 in English classes: A study of Non-English Majors in a private University (Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis). Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This study aims to investigate students' beliefs in the usage of Indonesian in English classes and to find out the extent of Indonesian usage in English classes. The study enrolled 152 non-English major students of an English matriculation program at a Christian university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia through an offline and online survey. The study utilised mixed methods and adapted Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) in the construction of questionnaire items. Based on the findings of the quantitative method, the usage of Indonesian language brought numerous benefits to the students. Furthermore, this study also involved six students to be interviewed and analysed using thematic analysis. Four themes were found including, Indonesian helps students to master vocabulary and understand the meaning of words. Secondly, the use of Indonesian occurs more frequently in casual interactions such as chitchat and discussion. Third, mixed language is more preferred among students when they practice in class. Lastly, Indonesian learner has the tendency to hinder the acquisition of the target language if used over a long period. Generally, this study found that students were helped and facilitated by the usage of L1. This study suggests that future research could compare non-major English students with major English students on exactly how L1 could influence their language beliefs and proficiency.
