Abstract

Sawor, R. A. (2025). University Students’ Beliefs on the use of English Webtoon for vocabulary mastery (Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis0 Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The aim of this study is to investigate university students’ beliefs on the use of English Webtoon for vocabulary mastery and how English Webtoon reading platforms could improve University Students’ vocabulary mastery. The study involved 207 university students in Indonesia who used English Webtoon. A questionnaire was distributed through social media such as Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and X. Based on the findings, English Webtoon seems to be useful in the context of education-level learners. By using the quantitative method, this study found that English Webtoon is perceived useful to improve university students’ vocabulary. In addition, this study involved six students in a follow-up interview stage. The interview data were analyzed through a thematic analysis approach and produced six main themes. The first theme showed that participants acquire English vocabulary from the visual of the story from Webtoon. The second theme revealed the variety of genres and word repetition in Webtoon facilitate new vocabulary learning. The third theme highlighted that Webtoon does not encourage active learning to acquire English vocabulary, but rather relies more on unintentional learning processes. The fourth theme showed that Participants acquired English Vocabulary easily from reading English Webtoon as a hobby. Furthermore, the fifth theme underlined how participants acquired English vocabulary from Webtoon naturally by interpreting the meaning of words through the context of the story. Lastly the sixth theme focused on Webtoon is not a primary choice as a medium for learning English vocabulary. These findings imply that English Webtoon has the potential as a medium to acquire English vocabulary and supporting the development of students' language skills. This study recommends that future studiesxi might conduct a study for students to increase their English proficiency using English Webtoon.
