Abstract

Rusanto, C. (2024). Students’ engagement in learning English: A study of vocational high schools in Indonesia (Unpublished undergraduate thesis). Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana: Yogyakarta, Indonesia. One of the key factors influencing the success of the learning process is student engagement, especially in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study aims to investigate the level of academic engagement of Indonesian Vocational High School (SMK) students in learning English as a foreign language (EFL), and to identify the factors that influence it. This study used a mixed methods approach. To determine the level of student engagement in EFL classes, data were collected through a closed questionnaire distributed to 101 vocational high school students from three provinces in Indonesia: East Kalimantan, Yogyakarta, and Central Sulawesi. The results of the quantitative analysis showed that the level of student academic engagement was in the moderate category, with an average score of 2.80 on a scale of 1 to 4. To find out what factors influenced student engagement, the researcher used a qualitative method by distributing an open questionnaire to six selected students and conducting an interview with an English teacher. The results showed that varied learning methods, especially audiovisual and interactive, as well as the application of materials relevant to students' majors, can significantly improve student engagement and understanding. However inconsistencies were found in its application across grade levels, indicating the need for further evaluation in the application of the contextual approach evenly.
