Abstract

This chapter proposes an instructional design for a Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCU) course in university-level English education in Indonesia. In response to the limitations of linguistically oriented language teaching, the chapter emphasizes the importance of developing intercultural communicative competence (ICC) to prepare students for effective communication in global and multicultural contexts. Drawing on Byram’s ICC framework and Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), the chapter bridges theory and classroom practice through a structured and context-sensitive design. It outlines key instructional components, including learning objectives, course content, teaching methods, roles of teachers and students, learning activities, materials, and assessment strategies. By integrating experiential learning, critical pedagogy, and reflective practices, this instructional design offers a practical framework for fostering meaningful intercultural learning in Indonesian higher education.
