Abstract

What makes an EFL lecturer feel confident and capable in navigating the changing demands of higher education? Professional growth does not always come from formal workshops or training programs, but can develop through everyday experiences of teaching, researching, collaborating, reflecting, and engaging with academic and community contexts. Drawing on recent literature and professional reflection, this chapter highlights four interconnected pathways for cultivating EFL lecturers’ self-efficacy: research engagement, cross-border collaboration, reflective teaching, and academic and community engagement. These experiences create opportunities for mastery, adaptation, and continuous learning while strengthening lecturers’ professional confidence and identity. The chapter also highlights the often-overlooked value of informal professional development and the challenge of its limited recognition within institutional evaluation systems. It argues for a broader understanding of professional development as an ongoing combination of formal, informal, and independent learning that can help EFL lecturers sustain their professional growth and self-efficacy.
